In Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico, both men and women carry their two family names (first their fathers, and second their mothers). Both are equally important and are mandatory for any official document. Married women never change their original family names for their husbands.
Cuban surnames are patterned after the Spanish form and contain both the fathers surname and the mothers surname in that order, sometimes separated by the word y (and). This is extremely valuable for genealogical research, since by knowing the full surname, you automatically get the surnames of both parents.

In contemporary Western societies (except for Iceland, Hungary, and sometimes Flanders, depending on the occasion), the most common naming convention is that a person must have a given name, which is usually gender-specific, followed by the parents family name.
