Add a pea-sized amount of car paste wax to a polishing pad or cloth. Work in short, smooth motions until there are no visible scratches in the polyurethane. Move the pad in smooth, horizontal motions so you can apply an even coat of wax to the surface. You can also use a section of 0000 steel wool to buff the surface.
I use a fine abrasive pad, usually white or gray in color, and pastewax, usually Johnsons or Trewax, which you can find in the floor-care section of your hardware store. Thin the wax with a little naptha or mineral spirits, and rub like crazy. Wait 5 minutes until it hazes, then buff off.
Sand with 220 between each coat. You can rub with steel wool as well. Do how many coats you feel is reasonable, I usually do 2 or 3, no more than that really. The key part, and this really does make a huge difference, is when the poly is cured after a few days, rub the whole thing down with a brown paper shopping bag.
Load your brush by dipping it about 1 in. into the mixture and brush the wood with long, even strokes from end to end. Keep a wet edge by overlapping each pass until the surface is completely coated. Catch any drips with your brush and smooth them into the surface.
0:23 4:10 So Im just going to start rubbing this in long strokes. And youll kind of feel the sandpaper.MoreSo Im just going to start rubbing this in long strokes. And youll kind of feel the sandpaper. Create almost a suction cup on the finish.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Rub-friendly finishes Those that respond best are hard, film-forming finishes like lacquer, shellac, varnishes, and polyurethanes. Thicker applications allow you more latitude in leveling, smoothing, and polishing, because theres more material to work with.
If polyurethane has cured on your skin its very difficult to get off. The only way is to allow it to naturally peel off or wash hands thoroughly using skin safe industrial hand cleaner. Once polyurethane glue has cured to surfaces its best to remove this with a tool or sand it off the surface.
