And do a circular massage. Along the length of the entire scar. And the goal here is to kind of get the skin. Moving over the bone.
You should start massaging your scars when your wounds are healed or after your stitches are removed. Your therapist may advise you to start earlier or later depending on the surgery you have had and the condition of your skin.
The most appropriate types of massage used to breakdown scar tissue include sports massage, deep tissue massage and remedial massage. Sports massage is used to break down scar tissue. A sports massage mainly focuses on areas containing soft tissues. Sports massage can vary in pressure depending on personal preference.
Joint mobilization exercises can help break up scar tissue over time and increase your range of motion. Aquatic therapy Aquatic therapy can be a great opportunity for you to exercise your injured knee in a low-impact environment.
Bandages Ace Wrap: Your incisions were closed with a single long stitch, which were covered with small white tapes called Steri-Strips. Your Steri- Strips should be left in place until your sutures are removed 10 to 12 days after surgery.
Ice, Elevate and Rest. If youve torn your ACL, the recommendation is to ice, elevate and rest your knee to control swelling, inflammation and pain. For at least the first 24 hours after your injury or until severe inflammation is controlled, ice and elevate your leg at a level above your heart while lying down.
Take the palms of your hands and put them on each side of your knee with your fingers wrapped around the front of your knee, right above your shin. Slowly take your fingers and slide them across your skin, creating a rolling motion. Repeat this exercise for 2 to 3 minutes a few times a day.
Typically, scar massage is recommended 2-3 weeks after surgery once the scar is fully closed with no scabbing, but it can be done between 6 weeks to 50 years after surgery. During the initial healing phase, the body is focused on closing the wound and preventing infection.
