Sand lightly just to get it flat. Then move on to 600 WD, then 1200 WD. I then move to white polishing compound applied with a power buffer on low speed. Be careful or the finish will get hot and melt.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
You can rub out all types of film forming finishes, including shellac, lacquer, oil based varnish and polyurethane, waterbased coatings and catalyzed or conversion coatings.

How to rub out a varnish to a mirror shine Tape off the perimeter. 600-grit sandpaper wrapped around a paint roller cover levels the surface. Wrap a blue shop towel around a felt block and clean off the surface. Mirlon abrasive pads further polish the finish.
The longer you wait the better. Shellac, solvent and water-based lacquers and two part finishes should cure at least a week. Oil-based varnishes and polyurethane should cure at least two weeks.
Between coats I scuffed the surface with an abrasive pad such as a Scotch-Brite kitchen scrubber. This helped provide a mechanical bond between varnish coats. If you are getting a rough finish after several coats of varnish, you may want to wet-sand the surface with 220 grit to level it out.
You should use an automotive polishing compound and a buffer for big areas. Small areas will have to be polished by hand unless you have some funky buffing tools. Make sure the poly has cured for a minimum of 4-5 days at 70f. Do not try to polish an uncured film.
