The pumped milk may be the only way for some babies to get breast milk. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasize that all babies should get human milk and recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months. But when a woman cannot produce milk, pumped milk from a donor is a better option than formula.
Its especially common during the early days of breastfeeding. Cluster feeding is more common in the late afternoon or early evening, but it can happen at any time of the day. A baby that typically nurses every 2-3 hours might nurse every 30 minutes to an hour for a few hours in a row.
Breast milk is the natural food for infants, and pumping can offer benefits that are similar, although not identical, to providing breast milk directly from the breast. Human breast milk is biologically designed to meet a babys nutritional needs, and many doctors recommend breast milk rather than feeding with formula.
Is pumping just as good as breastfeeding? Even though both offer the same nutrients to the baby, the benefits of both the methods highly depends on the needs of the baby and the mom.
I have worked with many mothers who choose to only pump, but they often worry that baby is not getting all the nutrition he/she needs. But no need to worry: Baby still receives most of the important nutrients needed. Furthermore, there are benefits to pumping entirely, if that is what works best for you and your baby.
The difference boils down to differences in digestion. Babies digest breast milk faster than formula milk so they feed more frequently. Infant formula takes longer to digest and thus may be considered more filling than breast milk.
