Below are some common questions from our customers that may provide you with the answer you're looking for. If you can't find an answer to your question, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Start your letter with Dear followed by your teachers name. This is a polite form of greeting known as a salutation. Include the title you use for your teacher, such as Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms., or Coach. Use the name your teacher prefers.
In many school settings, calling teachers by their first names is a deliberate and values-driven choice. In my experience leading a school where students call adults by their first names, this practice has helped us to break down unproductive barriers and to engender mutual respect between adults and students.
Always start out your email with a polite Dear or Hello followed by your professors name/title (Dr. XYZ, Professor XYZ, etc.). If youre not sure what their proper title is, using Professor followed by their last name is almost always a safe bet.
Should you refer to them as Professor, Doctor or something else? These tips should help you avoid any gaffes. address them as Professor Last Name. This includes assistant, associate, clinical, and research professors, as well as full professors.
Unless explicitly instructed to do so, never address your professor by their first name. Begin your email with a greeting addressing the professor politely, such as Dear Professor Smith or Hi Dr. Jones. After your message, end with a closing and signature, such as Sincerely, YourName or Thanks, YourName.
If a professor does not advise you of their preferences you address them by Professor ; this is being respectful. If a professor introduces themselves as Professor then you address them as such; this is being respectful.
If your professor signs the reply with a first name, it is still best to address him or her as Dr. Last-name or Professor Last-name in an email. Do not use the professors first name unless you have been explicitly invited to do so. You should also be sure to spell your professors name correctly.
The right thing to do is use an honorific (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr. ) until the person says, Please call me (first name). Boundaries are blurred when you hit college age, because the kids are no longer kids and start thinking of themselves as independent adults and their friends parents as equals.
