Every tire has a birth datethe day it was manufacturedand an expiration date that is six years from that manufacture date. Most automobile manufacturers warn drivers to replace vehicle tires after six years. To wait any longer than that is a gamble with tire integrity and is risky for drivers.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires every tire manufacturer to provide a standard tire identification number or code. This helps drivers like you learn a lot of information about your rubber with a quick glance at your tire date code.
The first two digits identify the week, and the second two identify the year. Imagine a DOT Date Code reading 2321. The first two numbers, 23, indicate the week of manufacture, while the last two numbers, 21, represent the year. Thus, this tire was made in the 23rd week of 2021.
The full DOT code (including the date code portion) is displayed on at least one sidewall of every tire. The opposite sidewall will have either a full DOT code (including date) or a partial DOT code (without the date code and any optional characters) at the manufacturers discretion.
If your tire doesnt have a DOT number branded on its side, the tire doesnt meet all U.S. requirements. Not all tires are intended to be imported and sold in the United States, so the tire may have been developed and produced without being tested and confirmed to meet the U.S. Federal Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
Regulatory Compliance: Driving with tires that do not meet DOT regulations may result in legal penalties, including fines and tickets. The DOT number assures that your tires meet safety standards. Insurance Claims: In the event of an accident, insurance companies may examine the condition of your vehicles tires.
The first two numbers of the 4-digit DOT date code (which, again, appears at the very end of the string of letters and numbers that start with DOT) indicate the week that the tyre was manufactured. The last two numbers of the date code tell you the year of manufacture.
