As you can see, there are different ways to handle requests for raw files from clients. The key is to be polite but firm, and to educate them on why raw files are not necessary or beneficial for them. You should also be prepared to offer alternatives or incentives if they really want them.
Look for photos licensed under a Creative Commons license that allows you to use the image for your intended purpose, such as CC BY (Attribution) or CC BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike). Always follow the terms of the license and provide proper attribution.
Even if you have no interest in the project, thank them for their consideration. This is polite and ends the conversation on a good note. Give a reason, but dont go into detail. Justifications and excuses can make it look as though youre not telling the whole truth.
Providing the RAW files could undermine their efforts and potentially reflect poorly on their work if the client decides to edit the files themselves. Another reason why a photographer may not want to give their clients RAW files is that it could damage their professional reputation.
The default rule under the Copyright Act is that the moviemaker owns all copyrights in the video. This would include both the raw footage and the final, edited version of the video.
Most of the time, clients probably just want to play around with their image or make a few minor tweaks. By politely explaining what a RAW file is, how it differs from the finished image they are given, and offering to fix the problem, you can avoid handing out your RAW photos.
Its not because they want to see test shots and bad frames. In most cases, its just because they assume that theyre missing out on something that happened, and they want to see it because its special to them, and if they dont get it now, theyll likely never get it. In other words, this is their chance.
