If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
If youre already holding 1,200 degrees F and then hit any sort of grade, exhaust gas temperature (EGT) only increases from thereand 1,300 to 1,400 is the warmest you want a Duramax to see for any lengthy amount of time. Living above 1,300 degrees for much longer than 20-30 seconds sustained is asking for trouble.
Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! Certain parts of your engine can fail due to the excessive heat produced.
During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy.
Can you clean an EGTS sensor? If there has been a build-up of contaminants on the sensor, it may be possible to clean it. This can be performed with a dry cloth.
Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety.
