The Big Reveal (150-250 wears) A good rule of thumb is to hold off on that first wash until youve crossed the 150- wear line, but we like to push it just a little further than this, aiming for six months of wear.
But just hang in there, even the stiffest raw denim will eventually get soft as you break it in. To ease this process a little, consider soaking the jeans before you start wearing them. Doing so will also make the jeans last longer and postpone crotch blowouts and other rips.
Because the fabric hasnt been pre-washed, raw denim jeans are pretty stiff when you put them on the first time. It takes a few weeks of regular wear to break-in and loosen up a pair. The indigo dye in the fabric can rub off as well. Well talk more about this when we go over the pros and cons of raw denim below.
The process of breaking in raw denim can take a few weeks to several months. But the break in period really hinges on one thing: how much you wear the jeans and what you do in them.
However, raw denim jeans will arrive a bit stiff and rigid as they havent gone through a washing process. Theyll also sport a darker, rich indigo hue since the producer hasnt treated the denim after its been cut and sewn.
With new raw denim, youll probably also experience whats known as bleeding or crocking. Thats a fancy way of saying the colour will rub off. Soaking might minimise this a bit, but how much they bleed totally depends on the denim.
Its exactly what its name suggests: denim in its purest form. Raw denim, also known as dry denim, refers to denim that hasnt gone through any pre-washing or shrinking processes in production. Completely untreated, raw denim feels stiff at first but transforms over time.
This takes at least a full year of daily wear, and the pay-off makes all the time you have invested in your pair more than worthwhile. The denim is butter-soft and, in places, it might be paper thin.
