While each profession has different requirements, here is the general certification process: Complete a three- to five-year apprenticeship program through an employer or trade union. Earn a degree or certificate from a trade, technical school or community college. Pay an exam fee. Pass a written and practical exam.
To obtain CAMTC certification, you must attend a CAMTC-approved massage therapy school in California with a program length of 500 hours or more. Of those 500 hours, a minimum of 100 must be in anatomy and physiology, contraindications, health and hygiene, and business and ethics.
You need to ensure the coursework and hours spent go towards receiving your license. Looking specifically at how long it will take to become a massage therapist, the minimum is 500 hours though many schools offer 950 hours and it takes around 10 months to complete.
State licensing is voluntary in California, meaning an unlicensed person can practice massage therapy. However, 250 hours or 500 hours of training are still required for practitioners and therapists, respectively. Should you desire, you can achieve certification through the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC).
A certified massage therapist is a professional who has completed a recognized massage therapy program and met the certification requirements.
The average licensed massage therapist salary in California is $66,540 per year or $31.99 per hour. Entry level positions start at $48,068 per year while most experienced workers make up to $114,400 per year.
