Both the Bates girl and Carter declared the Scottsboro boys are innocent. The girl, who testified at the first trial that she was attacked by the Negroes, said she told a false story because I was excited by the ruling class of the South.
In 1940, Bates moved to Washington state, where she married. She returned to Alabama in the 1960s. She died on October 27, 1976 at age sixty-three.
That train ride altered their lives forever. Two white women on board falsely accused them of rape. Eight of the teenagers were found guilty by all-white juries in Scottsboro and sentenced to death.
Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, two white women who were also riding the freight train, faced charges of vagrancy and illegal sexual activity. In order to avoid these charges, they falsely accused the Scottsboro Boys of rape.
She resurfaced in the 1970s to file a slander suit against NBC for its broadcast of the television movie Judge Horton and the Scottsboro Boys. Her husband died in October of 1976, and Ruby died a week later, just two days after Clarence Norris received his pardon from the State of Alabama.
