Re: Excel file locked for editing Open the workbook. Go to the Review tab. Click on Share Workbook in the Changes group. Uncheck the Allow changes by more than one user at the same time option. Click OK.
To simply remove an embedded file or object, select it and press Delete.

To break external links in Excel, this is what you need to do: On the Data tab, in the Queries Connections group, click the Edit Links button. In the Edit Links dialog box, select the links that you want to break. Click the Break Link button.
Go to the Data tab in the Excel ribbon, and click on Edit Links in the Connections group. The Edit Links dialog box will open, which shows all the linked workbooks that are used in the current workbook. This dialog box will show you all the external links as well as the internal links.
