Using documents as data was becoming more popular even before we went into the COVID-19 pandemic, and now its even more popular still, because its one of the methods we can still use even if we cant get hold of participants face-to-face. There are some difficulties though, not least that theres no agreed definition of what a document actually is. If you think of all the kinds of documents you can think of, it might include things like books, and wills and leaflets. Theyre very varied, very variable, and it can be hard to pin down exactly what a document is. But people generally do agree that its a container of words and images that transmits information, and thats a working definition we can go with for the time being.
