How do you get a zipper back on track? Its as easy as gently moving the zipper up and down on the track to get it readjusted. Try a spritz of WD-40 to oil it up. If it still doesnt budge, use a pin or needle and stick it into the zipper or along the track to get it to move or force it back together.
You can fix a separated zipper by realigning the teeth and squeezing the zipper slider with pliers to tighten it. If its stuck, try applying some lubricant like soap or a zipper wax. Be careful not to force it. Hope this helps get your zipper working smoothly again!

First close the zipper; you may have to tug a bit. Remove the metal stops at the top of the zipper using pliers, and take off the slide. Now you can realign the teeth manually. Put the slide back on, and reattach the top stops.
Start by engaging the zipper as normal, and zipping the slider an inch or two upward. Using the pliers on your multitool, pinch each side of the slider (one jaw of the pliers on the inside of the slider, one on the outside). Apply just enough force to gently squeeze the front and back of the slider closer together.

But for the most part, they just give out over time due to normal wear and tear. Dirt and debris can damage a zipper, while straining a zipper due to overstuffing a bag, for example, can also cause a zippers untimely demise. Using excessive force can cause a zipper to misalign, snag or even break off.
