In short, your first draft is to extract novel ideas out of your brain. Your second draft is to rewrite those ideas so they resonate. The process of writing your second draft is the process of making it look like you knew what you were doing all along.
To avoid using I in first-person writing, do two things. Use my or mine or me when possible. Describe what the person sees or does rather than say, I did it.
For example, an alternating first-person point of view, with chapters switching between the perspectives of the main characters, can enrich storytelling in a variety of genres by offering a more intimate connection to the characters inner thoughts and feelings.
Even if you feel like your first draft is bad, this is a great time to solidify some of the core story elements. As you were drafting, and the words were likely just flowing on the page, and you may not have been consciously thinking of elements like genre, length, and point of view (POV)and thats totally fine.
5 Tips for Editing Your Second Draft Take a break, then go through your draft with fresh eyes. Especially if this is your first novel, only start your second draft after youve had adequate time away from it. Understand your chaos. Break it up into separate goals. Track your narrative. Dont proofread until the end.
Try recasting sentences that start with I more objectively, so that the focus is on the what the emotion, the object, the person, the action and so on rather than the sense being used to experience it or the I-narrator doing the experience. Use the principles of free indirect speech to reduce your I count.
(1) Rewriting and redrafting. For many writers, the first draft is just the bare bones and often no one will ever see that version of the manuscript. But once those words are down, you can improve on them. Personally, I love the rewriting and redrafting process.
How to Revise First, put your draft aside for a little while. Time away from your essay will allow for more objective self-evaluation. Check the focus of the paper. Get feedback. Think honestly about your thesis. Examine the balance within your paper. Proofread. Tips for writing good sentences:
