Amazon uses the MOBI and AZW file formats for its Kindle software and readers. But as per their recent email, they are discontinuing support for MOBI ebooks. MOBI is an ancient ebook format and can no longer fit in with the latest developments in ebook technology and features offered by Amazon.
It will begin to gradually phase out MOBI format support on November 1, 2023, and will completely stop support for MOBI format on December 20, 2023. Unlike the previous announcement, Amazon has provided a detailed execution plan for the cessation of MOBI format support in the Send to Kindle service this time.
The MOBI format is the old name for Amazons proprietary ebook file format. Today, its called AZW3. Kindle readers and apps read AZW3 files, as well as the earlier AZW format and even older MOBI files. They dont read epub files. So, why did I say that epub is the right choice for an ebook file?
Yes, the MOBI format is dead. After 2022, Amazon not only recommends you use the EPUB format instead, but officially will not allow you to upload MOBI to KDP or sideload MOBI onto your Kindle devices.
Kindle with Enhanced Typesetting adjusts without customer intervention when the font size is large or the line length is short on the device page, to improve readability by preventing large gaps between words or squished text.
However, in 2022, Amazon discontinued support for its MOBI and AZW formats but added support for EPUB. Existing MOBI and AZW files in a Kindle Library are converted to the KF8 (. azw3) format, but adding new MOBI and AZW ebooks is no longer supported by Send to Kindle.
