But, when it comes to safety, the risks of leaded solder are great and it should only be used when permitted by regulatory agencies. It must also be disposed of properly. Lead is harmful to the environment and is toxic to the body with the additional hazard of being so quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.
Does it harm a kid to solder with good old 60-40 solder wire when he knows to always wash his hands after hes done? Experience shows that electronics soldering with leaded alloy is harmless. Dont worry about it. Unless you ate a roll of solder you dont have anything to worry about.
Water washable fluxes will be more active classed often as ORH1 and do better with lead-free soldering. However insure the residues are still completely removable in hot water; doing ionic contamination testing is recommended.
For a long time, people have primarily made solder from what is solder made of. However, environmental and health concerns surrounding lead prompted the rise of 63-37 solder as a safer alternative.
63/37 solder melts at 183 C. This type of solder is slightly more expensive than 60/40 but the absence of a plastic region makes it nicer to work with and more beginner-friendly. Joints made with this solder alloy will appear shinier than those made with 60/40 solder.
The 63/37 ratio, known as eutectic solder, has practically no plastic range and melts almost instantly at 183 C -361 F.
The ratio of 63/37 gives this solder a slightly lower melting point than 60/40 solder (183C instead of 190C) which some say allows you to heat and solder the connection quicker, reducing the chance of damaging components or wiring.
Lack of lead (Pb) decreases the flowability of solder, resulting in poor solderability. This is problematic not only for targeting P.W.B. or components, but also for the tips of soldering irons.
