You should solder most flat metals, such as copper and tin, with a rosin-core solder. Use acid-core solder only on galvanized iron and other hard-to-solder metals. To get a good bond on two pieces of flat metal, apply a thin layer of solder to both edges (Fig.
The most common reason for a soldering iron tip not tinning is due to the oxidation of the tip. Over time, the metal tip of the soldering iron will oxidize and form a layer of oxidation on the surface. This oxidation layer prevents the solder from sticking to the tip, thus preventing it from tinning.
Apply a small amount of solder to the cleaned tip while ensuring it is evenly distributed. Allow the solder to melt and coat the entire surface of the tip. Wipe off an excess solder using damp sponge or cleaning pad. Repeat the re-tinning process regularly when soldering to maintain tip performance.
Adjust the temperature of the soldering iron to a typical work range (about 300C). Apply flux-cored solder to the oxidized tip. The heat will activate the flux and start the chemical reaction that will remove the oxidation. Use brass wool or specially designed cleaners on the tip.
Heat the iron, Dip the tip in the paste and then wipe it off. Apply a little solder. The tip should be very bright silvery looking, almost a mirror. Similarly pre-tin the place the wire will go and then heat the wire again and keep heat on as you stick it tin place.

Soldering is temperature-sensitive. The metal has to be hot enough to melt metal. Otherwise, it wont adhere properly. Hold your soldering iron against the metal for an extended time until it docHubes temperatures high enough for the solder to melt and adhere to the metal.
