Styles keep your formatting consistent within a document. Themes keep your look and feel consistent across multiple documents. Templates allow you to re-use text, and keep your look and feel consistent across multiple documents.
The five types of styles are: Paragraph styles. Character styles. Frame styles. Page styles. List styles.
The best way to edit styles is to turn on the Stylist (F11, or /Format /Styles and formatting). Select the category of styles required by clicking on one of the five icons on the top of that window (tooltip pops up if you hover on them) then right click on the required style and select Modify from the popup.
Open a file and set the formats to your liking. Then File---Templates----Save and name it. Then do File--Templates---Organize click on your new template and click the Commands Button and set as default. This link will also help even though it talks about Writer
To apply a paragraph, page, or frame style, hover the mouse over the paragraph, page, or frame and click. To apply a character style, hold down the mouse button while selecting the characters, Clicking on a word applies the character style for that word. Repeat this step until you made all the changes for that style.
Five different styles are available in OpenOffice.org Writer: An entire paragraph is impacted by paragraph styles. A paragraphs text block is impacted by character styles. Page styles have an impact on page layout (page size, margin, and the like).
Open the Styles and Formatting window. From the icons at the top of the window, choose the type of style to create (paragraph, character, and so on). In the document, select the item to save as a style. In the Styles and Formatting window, click the New Style from Selection icon.
To change an existing style using the Style dialog box, right-click on the style in the Styles and Formatting window and select Modify from the pop-up menu. The dialog box displayed depends on the type of style selected.
