Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
EGTs are too high when they begin to pose danger to engine and turbo components. Generally, 1600 degrees Fahrenheit (871 degrees Celsius) is considered to be a good number, borderline high EGTs. It is probably safe to briefly run up to 1650F (899C) degrees.
Many experts suggest installing the EGT probe in the exhaust manifold before the turbo for three reasons: 1) The farther the EGT probe is away from the manifold, the greater the lag time response to dynamic changes in temperature. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! There are two types of EGTS: Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) and Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC). NTK Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors (EGTS) - Niterra Niterra products exhaust-gas-tempe Niterra products exhaust-gas-tempe
All EgT probes must be mounted: In the primary header tubes. The same distance (one to two inches) from the cylinder head. Before the first bend.
It should be noted that when the EGT is measured after the turbine, the turbine outlet temperature at full throttle or under a heavy load typically would be 200 to 300 F. lower than the EGT measured in the exhaust manifold.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy.
