I think one misconception is that you have to strip and sand a piece down to bare wood before you can re-stain it. Sometimes that is necessary, but if you have a piece without much of a topcoat (sealer, poly, etc) and the finish is in good shape, you can go over it with a gel stain.
With a solid color stain, anytime you would like to give your deck a fresh coat, simply go-ahead with a simple light cleaning and put another coat on. You dont even have to sand unless you want or if it could really use one.
To fix a streaky job, first strip as much of that color off as you can. Scrub the surface of an oil-based with a Scotch-Brite pad and mineral spirits until the streaks are all gone. If you have a water-based stain, scrub the area using a lacquer thinner.
Prepping a Deck for Restaining Remove all furniture before you begin. Soak the ground around the deck. Cover hard surfaces and plants properly. Sweep the deck. Check for loose screws and boards. Replace any damaged planks. Check for and clean off any stains.
That said, applying a fresh coat of stain to your deck isnt always such a straightforward process. In some cases, your decks previous coat of stain will begin to fade and peel from the surface, in which case its best to remove it before applying a new coat.

And your stain of choice and will be ready for finish. And check it. Out. Check it out. And check it out. Okay i can do this guys i can do this.
Staining a previously stained deck If there are flakes of your stain on the tape, then you will need to strip your deck before restaining.
Leave the original stain in place if you want to stain the piece a darker color. If youre going from a light stain to a dark stain, theres no need to strip away the existing stain first. However, keep in mind that the existing stain may alter the color of the finished product.
