Simply use a lint-free rag soaked in mineral spirits or paint thinner to rub the areas of over-applicationwherever the stain has puddled or is thick and stickyto remove the excess stain. Areas of over-application may be noticeable because the stain is darker. Start with light pressure (this may be all you need).
Mix equal parts vinegar and water; dip a soft cloth in the mixture and wring out really well. Wipe the wood in the direction of the grain, rewetting and wringing your cloth often. After several passes to remove the buildup, dry the wood thoroughly with a cloth.
