If youre going from a light stain to a dark stain, theres no need to strip away the existing stain first. However, keep in mind that the existing stain may alter the color of the finished product. Sand the surface of your project lightly with fine-grit sandpaper.
In addition, you can try a second coat of stain to see if it deepens the color. Sometimes, the wet stain is exactly the color that youre looking for, but when the stain dries, it goes dull. Often, applying the clear protective finish will make the stain color-rich again.
To properly maintain wood, a light cleaning and recoat are recommended every 2 years on horizontal surfaces and every 3 to 4 years on vertical surfaces. Some hardwoods, such as Ipe, Garapa or Tiger Wood may need reapplication yearly. These extremely dense hardwoods do not readily soak up sufficient amounts of stain.
Water-based stains need to be stripped off before you apply a new finish, while oil-based stains can be recoated after you use a deck cleaner. To test the stain: Apply a small amount of deck stripper to a small area on your deck. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wipe it off with a cleaning rag.
Yes! With the proper prep work and deck staining knowledge, you can successfully stain a deck that has already been stained.
