For example, once your entire home is properly sealed the south and west walls will usually need recoating first (often within 3-5 years). The north and east outside walls are more protected from UV sunlight and weather, and may need resealing only every 5-8 years.
Log homes require more maintenance than other types of houses - though not as much as many people would imagine. The most important thing to keep in mind is that logs deteriorate over time without care and maintenance. Therefore, you will have to clean, re-stain and re-caulk your log home from time to time.
Oil-based stains are a one-coat application because the oil will repel the second coat whereas with water-based stains, the second coat can still absorb.
As a general rule, you will need to stain your log home every 4 to 6 years, depending on the elements. Factors such as exposure to rain, sunlight, hail, wind, climate etc. will affect how often you home needs to be re-stained.
Start by stripping off what you can (as described above), then seal the wood with a water-thin mix of de-waxed shellac and alcohol. Saturate the wood with the solution and wipe it off. Let it dry for 2 hours. Then switch to a 100 percent pigmented stain, such as Varathane (most stains are a mix of dye and pigment).
Sealing and Chinking Repair For a typical 1,500 square foot home, the price tag for this type of log cabin maintenance may run anywhere from $3,000 to $7,500. Homes that are not maintained properly may sustain damage.
Leave the original stain in place if you want to stain the piece a darker color. If youre going from a light stain to a dark stain, theres no need to strip away the existing stain first. However, keep in mind that the existing stain may alter the color of the finished product.
For example, water-based stains do not last as long as oil-based stains do. Water-based stains are on the shorter end of longevity, with a lifespan of around three to five years, whereas oil-based stains will usually last approximately five to seven years.
