Sanding is usually the last resort and often the most effective. When trying to go from dark to light, before you strip the project and start over, try toning with a yellow toner. I prefer pigmented toners; either French yellow ochre or a chromium yellow. This is the only way I know to try to go from dark to light.
To remove wood stain, use a chemical wood stripper or sand the surface thoroughly. Apply the stripper with a brush, let it sit, and scrape off the softened stain. Sand any remaining residue. Always wear protective gear and work in a well-ventilated area.
To fix a streaky job, first strip as much of that color off as you can. Scrub the surface of an oil-based with a Scotch-Brite pad and mineral spirits until the streaks are all gone. If you have a water-based stain, scrub the area using a lacquer thinner.
Simply use a lint-free rag soaked in mineral spirits or paint thinner to rub the areas of over-applicationwherever the stain has puddled or is thick and stickyto remove the excess stain. Areas of over-application may be noticeable because the stain is darker. Start with light pressure (this may be all you need).

Removing the Dark Stain First strip the furniture with the stripper of your choice. Next, clean up the stripper with steel wool and mineral spirits. After the stripper is cleaned up, the next thing youll do is sand the piece of furniture. After youre done sanding its time to clean up the wood particles.
To get rid of the excess stain now, take a cloth dampened with mineral spirits and use that to scrub down the piece. This should remove the excess stain.
