Are Social Security numbers reused? No, the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not reuse numbers. It does not reassign a Social Security number (SSN) when the person holding that nine-digit combination dies. About 454 million SSNs have been used to date.
You can change your Social Security number under certain circumstances. For example, if you are a victim of identity theft, were assigned a duplicate number or are facing a threat to your safety, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue you a new Social Security number and card.
You can do this by contacting the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or their teletypewriter number at 1-800-325-0778. Getting a new Social Security number is challenging but possible. You must have a valid reason for the change and provide documentation to prove it.
The Social Security Administration does allow you to change your number, but only under limited circumstances, such as identity theft or if your safety is in danger. You will also need to supply appropriate documentation to support your application for a new number.
If you decide to apply for a new number, youll need to prove your identity, age, and U.S. citizenship or immigration status. For more information, ask for Your Social Security Number and Card (Publication Number 05-10002). Youll also need to provide evidence that youre having ongoing problems because of the misuse.

You also can lock your SSN by visiting the Department of Homeland Securitys myE-Verify website. Activating the sites Self Lock feature can stop someone from using your SSN for employment fraud. Keep in mind that youre not able to freeze your SSN, meaning that it cant be used at all.
