Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix, the lower, narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Possible symptoms of cervicitis include bleeding between menstrual periods, pain with intercourse or during a pelvic exam, and abnormal vaginal discharge.
Reparative Changes. Repair. Repair. Changes in the skin cells of the cervix which suggest that a healing process is underway or that the cervix is reacting to the presence of a virus or bacteria.
Reactive cellular changes due to regeneration and repair are associated with severe cervicitis, chronic infections, or surgical intervention.
The most common criteria for reactive cell change include an increase in nuclear size, presence of nucleoli, binucleation, cytoplasmic vacuolization, and polychromasia.
Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus. Your health care provider will ask you to come in for another Pap test in 2 to 4 months.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
