Teacher: Heres the rule: Use single quotation marks to enclose a quotation within a quotation. Student: Okay, but what do you mean by a quotation within a quotation? Teacher: Good question. Lets start by having you make a statement about my cat Percy. Student: Okay. How about this: Percys fur is tangled and knotted. Teacher: All right. Now, lets place quotation marks around it to show that these are your direct words. Student: Thats easy enough. Teacher: Okay. Now, lets make your direct quotation part of another direct quotation. Student: Okay. I said, I will start brushing Percy every day now that you told me, Percys fur is tangled and knotted. Teacher: Great. But now we have your quotation inside my quotation. That leaves us with lots of quotation marks and confusion. We can fix that by using single quotation marks for the quotation inside the quotation. Student: Ah! So the sentence would read, I said, [double quotation mark] I will start brushing Percy every day now t

To include an in-text citation with a quotation youve altered, put the citation first, followed by a semicolon, and then the words emphasis added: Lincoln specifically advocated a government for the people (Brown 512; emphasis added).
If incorrect spelling, grammar, or punctuation in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and bracketed, immediately after the error in the quotation (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 274). For example, they made theyre [sic] lunches.
APA in-text citation style uses the authors last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14).
In text, cite both dates: first the original version, then the version you read, separated by a slash. The example below is a chapter from an edited book, reprinted in another book. You may adapt this to whatever type of source you are using. Information adapted and reproduced from the APA Style website.
You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
When you write information from a source in your own words, cite the source by adding an in-text citation at the end of the paraphrased portion as follows: Mother-infant attachment became a leading topic of developmental research following the publication of John Bowlbys studies (Hunt, 1993).
An ellipsis, three periods separated by a space [ . . . ] and set between brackets, communicates this change. (This is ing to the MLA Style Guide; check your assigned style guide for other conventions.)
Omitting parts of a quotation Use an ellipsis (three dots) to omit or remove parts of a quote and show where youve removed text. Dont change the meaning of the quote when you do this.
