Legacy Portraits are exclusive styled studio sessions that capture the essence of an individual, couple, a parent/child or family relationship.
Consequently, modern portraiture evolved to capture not only the physical likeness but also the emotional and psychological aspects of the subject. The advent of abstract expressionism in the 1940s had a docHub impact on this new portraiture style.
Although few examples remain from the oldest artistic traditions, portrait art is considered to be at least 5,000 years old, stretching back to ancient Egypt. Portraiture takes many forms as we discuss below, but the act of representing a person through art is a compelling and persistent one.
Artists had little opportunity to take a direct likeness of important sitters and as a result they made portrait patterns, which would often circulate between artists workshops. These patterns could be copied from existing paintings or be based on pre-existing drawings from the life.
Between 1350 and 1400, secular figures began to reappear in frescos and panel paintings, such as in Master Theodorics Charles IV receiving fealty, and portraits once again became clear likenesses.
Independent portraits, however, would have to await the man-centered worldview of the Renaissance. Men and women now sought speaking likenesses for a range of purposes for the first time since antiquity. Portraits became part of the dynastic business of kingdoms and were deployed as statements of wealth and status.
Usually, these types of portraits were done to show power, status, and nobility and were typically reserved for the wealthy. However, once photography became popular in the late 1800s with the release of the very first Kodak cameras, portraiture became popular and was more available to the masses.
