Failure to File Biennial Paperwork Not submitting an update before the deadline will deactivate your U.S. DOT number and incur fines of up to $1,000 a day. The FMCSA requires motor carriers to update their business information every two years or sooner if changes occur.
To know when to submit your biennial update, look at the last two digits of your USDOT number. If the second to last digit is even, then the update is due every even calendar year (2024, 2026, etc.) and if the second to last digit is odd, the update is due on the odd calendar years (2023, 2025, 2027, etc.).
What Is the Biennial Update? The biennial update is a requirement set by the FMCSA to update your MCS-150 Form (also called the Motor Carrier Identification Report) every two years as part of renewing your truck/fleet registration.
If your agency has a USDOT number and operates under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, you are responsible for updating your information with the FMCSA every two years.
You are required to provide this update every two years. Failure to complete a biennial update will result in deactivation of your U.S. DOT Number and may result in civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000 as periodically adjusted for inflation.
Reactivating Your Inactive DOT Number Once you start the process, it can take around five business days to reactivate your DOT number. The first step in USDOT number reactivation is to rectify the problem that caused your inactive status, whether its the biennial update or renewing your insurance.
In addition, FMCSA requires all entities under its jurisdiction to update their information every two years: US DOT Numbers: Routine Updates. Biennial Updates.
If the next-to-last digit of the USDOT Number is even, the motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider shall file its update in every even-numbered calendar year. FMCSA also requires you to update your registration information within 30 days of any change.
