Choose Apple menu System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Transfer or Reset on the right, then click Erase All Contents and Settings. In Erase Assistant, enter your administrator information and click Unlock.
Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose View Show All Devices. In the sidebar, select a volume, then click the First Aid button . In the First Aid dialog, click Run, then follow the onscreen instructions. When the First Aid process is complete, click Done.
Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal. app) on your Mac. Type diskutil repairvolume /and then press Return to repair the corrupt Macintosh HD (Mac hard drive). Once the repair process is complete, check if the drive issues and errors are fixed and youre able to access the data.
An outdated Mac operating system is more prone to Mac errors, which is probably why Disk Utility wont let you erase the hard drive. Luckily, updating the macOS can update firmware on your Mac and fix the erase process has failed error. Click the Apple logo, then select System Preferences Software Update.
Choose Apple menu Restart, then immediately press and hold Command-R. In the Recovery app window, select Disk Utility, then click Continue. In Disk Utility, select the volume you want to erase in the sidebar, then click Erase in the toolbar.
Make sure your Mac is shut down. Hold the Command and R keys and release them when you see the Recovery Mode. Step 2. Click the Disk Utility, and your Mac will enter the Disk Utility successfully.
If you get a message saying macOS cant repair a disk, you may need to reformat it or replace it. Back up as much of your data as possible, erase and reformat the disk, then restore your backed up data. If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged, and you may need to replace it.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu System Settings, then click Appearance in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Select Light, Dark or Auto on the right.
