The cardinal symptoms of heart failure are: dyspnoea (shortness of breath) (Fig. 2) orthopnoea (breathless when lying flat) paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea (PND) peripheral oedema fatigue and reduced effort tolerance.
Heart Failure: Is There a Difference? Congestive heart failure (CHF) and heart failure are chronic progressive conditions characterized by a weakened heart that is unable to pump enough blood to meet the bodys energy needs. Heart failure often refers to early-stage weakening of the heart without congestion.
Shortness of breath with activity or when lying down. Fatigue and weakness. Swelling in the legs, ankles and feet. Rapid or irregular heartbeat.
The most common findings include arterialization of the conjunctival veins, chemosis, proptosis, diplopia, bruit, retro-orbital headache, elevated intraocular pressure, and a decrease in vision. The classic triad of ocular symptoms seen in direct CCFs are less commonly seen in indirect CCFs.
CHF results from any disorder that impairs ventricular filling or ejection of blood to the systemic circulation. Patients usually present with fatigue and dyspnea, reduced exercise tolerance, and systemic or pulmonary congestion. The etiology of HF is variable and extensive.
Signs that represent left-sided heart failure include cool clammy skin, cyanosis, rales, a gallop rhythm, and a laterally displaced PMI. Signs that represent right sided heart failure include an elevated JVP, pedal edema, ascites, hepatomegaly, a parasternal heave and hepatojugular reflux.
Congestive heart failure is a long-term condition that happens when your heart cant pump blood well enough to give your body a normal supply. Blood and fluids collect in your lungs and legs over time. Medications and other treatments help manage symptoms like swelling.
Patients suspected of having a CCF eventually undergo noninvasive imaging such as a standard CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan which can show a dilated SOV, orbital congestion, or enlargement of the extraocular muscles.
Acute congestive heart failure is a term that is often used interchangeably with acute heart failure, but it refers explicitly to acute heart failure that results in an accumulation of blood in other parts of the body, most commonly in the lungs and lower extremities.
Congestive heart failure, or heart failure, is a long-term condition in which your heart cant pump blood well enough to meet your bodys needs. Your heart is still working. But because it cant handle the amount of blood it should, blood builds up in other parts of your body.
