XHTML is a family of current and future document types and modules that reproduce, subset, and extend HTML 4 [HTML4]. XHTML family document types are XML based, and ultimately are designed to work in conjunction with XML-based user agents.
Full name. Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML) 1.0. Description. XHTML is an openly documented, freely implementable format for marking up structured documents for use as pages and applications on the World Wide Web. The standard was developed and has been maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
XHTML Forms. Web forms, much like the analogous paper forms, allow the user to provide input. This input is typically sent to a server for processing. Forms can be used to submit data (e.g., placing an order for a product) or retrieve data (e.g., using a search engine).
The latest versions of the HTML and XHTML specifications are known as HTML5 and XHTML5, respectively. These specifications are the basis for all modern web browsers, and define the standard for how HTML documents are structured and processed.
As long as support is not widespread, most web developers avoid using XHTML that is not HTML-compatible, so advantages of XML such as namespaces, faster parsing, and smaller-footprint browsers do not benefit the user.
XHTML stands for Extensible Hypertext Markup Language.
The XHTML family includes three document types; the first is XHTML 1.0, which was recommended by W3C on January 26, 2000. The second is XHTML 1.1, which was recommended by W3C on May 31, 2001. The third is XHTML5, a standard used for developing an XML adaptation of the HTML5 specification.
XHTML has three main types of markup: elements, attributes, and values. Elements identify document structure and can contain text, other elements, or nothing at all. Attributes contain information pertaining to an element. In XHTML, attribute values must always be enclosed in quotation marks.
