2. Which of the following indexes can be created on XML columns? Explanation: You can also create full-text indexes on XML columns.
The primary XML index is a shredded and persisted representation of the XML BLOBs in the xml data type column. For each XML binary large object (BLOB) in the column, the index creates several rows of data. The number of rows in the index is approximately equal to the number of nodes in the XML binary large object.
An appropriate storage model for your XML documents is an xml data type column. This preserves the InfoSet content of your XML data. Indexing the XML column benefits query performance.
The primary XML index indexes all tags, values, and paths within the XML instances in an XML column. To create a primary XML index, the table in which the XML column occurs must have a clustered index on the primary key of the table.
Additionally, when data is indexed, the indexing process can take up additional storage space. All the data that is not part of a clustered data index now needs its own storage space. This constant need for added space can quickly balloon into a serious storage issue for enterprises that index a lot of data.
For example, an index is ideal for columns that have an integer data type and are also unique or non-null columns. For columns that have well-defined subsets of data, you can use a filtered index in SQL Server 2008 (10.0. x) and higher versions.
To update data in an XML column, use the SQL UPDATE statement. Include a WHERE clause when you want to update specific rows. The entire column value will be replaced. The input to the XML column must be a well-formed XML document.
Additional storage. The first and perhaps most obvious drawback of adding indexes is that they take up additional storage space. The exact amount of space depends on the size of the table and the number of columns in the index, but its usually a small percentage of the total size of the table.
The XML column may be a computed column, based on the [n]varchar(max) column. However, you cant create an XML index on a computed, XML column, nor can an XML index be built on [n]varchar(max) or varbinary(max) columns.
For instance, the columns used in the WHERE clause, the JOIN prediction, LIKE and the ORDER BY clause are the best candidate columns to be indexed. In addition, indexing the computed columns and the foreign key columns will enhance the performance of the queries that read from these columns.
