Edit or format an index entry and update the index To update the index, click the index, and then press F9. Or go to References Update Index.
To customize your existing table of contents: Go to References Table of Contents. Select Custom table of contents. Use the settings to show, hide, and align page numbers, add or change the tab leader, set formats, and specify how many levels of headings to show.
Update a table of contents On the References tab, select. Update Table. Select one of the following: Update page numbers only This only updates the pages that the headings are on, and ignores any changes to the heading text. Select OK.
Need a quick fix for the ToC numbering? To fix the incorrect numbering in your Word document, right click the Table of Contents and select Update Field. After this the numbering for the Table of Contents will be updated correctly in the document.
An index is an alphabetical and detailed listing of topics in a document, with a corresponding page number displayed alongside (see picture below). An index is typically located at the end of a long document. An index helps readers to navigate long documents and locate specific information they may need.
If you need to update page numbers due to edits, just right click on the Table of Contents and select Update Field. You can update the whole table or just the page numbers. If you made changes to heading names, then you need to update the whole table, but otherwise, just updating page numbers does the job.
To build a Custom Table of Contents, you need to tell Word what you want, and this is where you do it. Click REFERENCES Table of Contents Custom Table of Contents. To make changes to a document, in the upper-right corner, select Edit Document Edit. If someone else created the document, they might not allow editing. You can go to File Save as, save it with another name, and edit the new document. Or you can ask the document owner to enable editing.
