Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus. Your health care provider will ask you to come in for another Pap test in 2 to 4 months.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
You may be asked to repeat your Pap test more often for a short period of time, for example every 6 months. This allows time to see if the abnormal cells change back to normal on their own. Your doctor may suggest a human papillomavirus (HPV) test. You may be referred for a special examination called colposcopy.
If your Pap test is abnormal, follow up with your gynecologist immediately to discuss next steps. If the second, follow-up Pap test result is also abnormal, you might have a cervical biopsy, also known as a colposcopy.
Possible causes of an abnormal Pap smear include vaginal inflammation or an active vaginal infection. You may also have abnormal test results if you had sex prior to your procedure. In some cases, abnormal Pap results are inconclusive for no reason at all.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Causes A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age. Pre-cancerous changes (cervical dysplasia) that often go away on their own.
Atypical repair is characterized by reparative cells that have cytologic abnormalities that exceed those of typical repair. Atypical repair is a form of atypical squamous or glandular cells associated with a wide variety of conditions ranging from reactive to neoplastic.
