Rework in production is the process of repairing things that are defective, failed, or non-conforming during or after inspection. Disassembly, repair, replacement, reassembly, and other tasks are included in this procedure.
Rework is defined as wholesome, salvageable product generated during a production run that is not acceptable as the approved finished end product on the end product schedule. Any raw product that does not go through the entire production process should not be considered rework.
Note that reworking is distinct from reprocessing. Under ICH Q7, reprocessing is confined to intermediates, whereas reworking is reserved for finished products (2). Reworking includes steps that were not part of an initial biomanufacturing process.
(x) Rework means action taken on a nonconforming product so that it will fulfill the specified DMR requirements before it is released for distribution.
Reworked means any material from a previous batch is processed into a new batch. Examples; - Reworking left over dough from a previous production into a new production.
Rework could be as simple as replacing an inaccurate label or as involved as replacing parts or welding on new fixtures or materials. In some cases, the error may be such that the most efficient option is to simply scrap the item entirely and get a new one.
