Why are my EGTs so high?

As we pointed out earlier, high EGTs are the result of too much fuel for the available air. If you see EGTs climbing over 1300 F., the fastest way to reduce the amount of fuel going to the engine is to back off the accelerator pedal. Another possible solution is to downshift if your speed permits it.

How do you lower your EGTs?

Some solutions include larger turbos, water injection, and aftermarket intercoolers, but these tend to be very expensive upgrades. Manta Performance can lower your EGTs without costing you a fortune! What EGT temperature is too high?

Keeping EGTs below 1,200 degrees is an accepted safe limit for towing. Excessively high EGTs are the result of a rich air/fuel ratio and are typically realized when engines are modified.

What causes EGT to rise?

An engine with degraded performance is less efficient and requires more fuel to produce the same thrust leading to an increase in EGT. A number of parameters can cause temporary performance degradation that will have an influence on EGT or there can be a progressive degradation of engine performance.

How to tighten an EGT probe?

Once you tighten the fitting to where it is snug, just simply turn a quarter more! Be sure not to go too tight. If you tighten the EGT ferrule too tight it could damage the EGT probe and cause inaccurate readings.

What happens if EGT gets too hot?

During normal operation of such vehicles, EGTs usually stay within safe limits, but situations can occur where the EGT gets too high, doing serious engine damage without any warning to the driver. A pyrometer that displays a diesels EGT can warn the driver of dangerous conditions before such damage occurs.
