Carlson shoots Candys dog because it is old, sick, and no longer able to work as a sheep dog.
Before George shoots Lennie, he tells him to look out over the river and picture the farm theyre going to have. George goes on to describe the farm and tells him that he will tend to the rabbits and that everybody will be nice to him and assures him that hes not mad at him for what he did.
In John Steinbecks novel Of Mice and Men, the death of Candys dog symbolises the loneliness of the ranch workers, and demonstrates that there is no place for affection or sentimentality in their lives. Early on in the novel, George states that men who work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world.
In Of Mice and Men, Candy says he should have shot his own dog because he shouldnt have let a stranger shoot my dog. He should have done it himself and been the last one his dog saw. The dog is obviously important to Candy, and he tries without success to save the animal from the men who want to put it down.
Carlson wanted to shoot Candys dog because it was smelly, but mainly because it was old, toothless, and overall in a miserable physical state, and Carlson wanted to put it out of its misery.
Carlson says, He aint no good to you, Candy. An he aint no good to himself. Candy worries that shooting the old dog would hurt him; and Carlson reassures him by saying, The way Id shoot him, he wouldnt feel nothing. This suggests that Carlson is trying to do Candy a favor.
Curleys wife is never named in the novel, which reflects how she is not valued as a person. Her character demonstrates the negative attitude towards women that may have been held by men such as the ranchworkers at the time.
The dog also symbolises Candy himself. The dog has docHubed the end of its working life, and instead of being cared for in its old age, it is shot; because it is no longer of use to anyone, it is no longer worth keeping alive.
