in this episode we are going to look at relevant costs in a scrap or rework decision cost incurred in manufacturing units of product that do not meet quality standards or sunk costs they cannot be recovered as long as reworking costs to rework those units to get them to a point where they can be sold as long as those rework costs are recovered through selling the reworked product and the rework does not interfere with normal production the decision should be to rework rather than scrap products for example if abc has 10 000 defective units they cost a dollar to make the units can be scrapped now for 40 cents each in other words they will be able to sell them for 40 cents a piece or they can be reworked at an additional cost of 80 cents per unit if they are reworked the units can be sold for the regular selling price of a dollar fifty reworking those defective units however will prevent the production of ten thousand new units that would sell for a dollar fifty so letamp;#39;s see whet

To distinguish among spoilage, rework, and scrap: 1. Spoilage is the unusable portion of a product that cannot be sold or used, while rework is the process of correcting defects to make the product usable. Scrap is the waste material or by-products generated during the production process.
Rework is that part of the final produce which has not been accepted by the client because it does not meet the required specifications. However, those specifications can be met by working on the item once again. Hence the name rework.
Spoilage may occur at any stage of the production process, and it may be either normal or abnormal. Normal spoilage is the unavoidable and expected loss of units due to the nature of the process, materials, or equipment. It is considered part of the cost of production and is usually allocated to the good units.
Rework costs: Rework costs are incurred when defective products or processes are identified and need to be fixed or modified to meet the quality requirements. For instance, if a product is found to have a manufacturing defect during quality control, it may need to be reworked or repaired before it can be sold.
How do job-costing systems account for rework? Normal rework specific to a job is assigned to that job or, when common to all jobs is allocated as part of manufacturing overhead. Cost of abnormal rework is written off as a loss on the accounting period.
Reworkunits of production that do not meet the specifications required by customers but which are subsequently repaired and sold as good finished goods. Scrapresidual material that results from manufacturing a product. Scrap has low total sales value compared with the total sales value of the product.
What is Rework? In contrast to scrap, rework refers to finished goods that dont meet quality standards, but can be adjusted or repaired to get them to a level of quality that is acceptable for customers.
