this is a binary stiffness compliant mechanism that can achieve two different states of stiffness by triggering a simple switch one state is very compliant while the other state is very stiff a raw video of this mechanism was recently published to youtube by rainier coopens who designed the mechanism while working in my lab at ucla as a visiting scholar from delft university since the video was posted weamp;#39;ve received many requests to explain how our mechanism works so this video is in response to those requests first itamp;#39;s important to understand that the mechanism consists of three components one a compliant buy stable switch which can be triggered to achieve stability in two different resting positions two angled blade flexures which are designed to buckle and curve outward when the switch is pressed inward and three parallel blade flexures which stiffly constrain the shuttle and thus restrict it from moving in any direction except along the direction perpendicular to t
