The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
Ask the IRS to search for your EIN by calling the Business Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933. The hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.
Submit an application to the IRS: Once you have corrected the issue that caused your EIN revocation, you can submit an application to the IRS to have your EIN reinstated. Youll need to complete Form 8975, which is the Application for Reinstatement of an EIN.
Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
Complete and submit Form 1023, Form 1024 or Form 1024-A with the appropriate user fee not later than 15 months after the later of the date on the organizations revocation letter (CP-120A) or the date the organization appeared on the Revocation List on the IRS website.
If you need a copy, you can request a 147C letter, also known as an EIN Verification Letter. Getting a Copy of Your EIN: If you already have an EIN but require proof of your EIN, you can contact the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line to request a copy of your EIN, specifically the CP 575 or 147C letter.
An EIN is like a Social Security number for your business while you cant change it, you can get a new one and change your business details. The IRS uses an employer identification number, or EIN, to identify a business entity. This unique nine-digit number is like a Social Security number for companies.
Once you have an EIN, its permanently linked to your business entity. It cant be reassigned or canceled, but the account can be closed if you decide to close your business.
