However, certain situations may allow for multiple businesses to operate under a single EIN, known as disregarded entities.
Thieves often steal a business federal tax ID, Employer Identification Number (EIN), and use that information to open lines of credit, file fraudulent tax returns, and worse. Statistics vary by source, but they all point to a rising trend in incidents of business identity theft.
Dont submit a new application if you made a mistake on your original EIN form. Instead, send a letter to the IRS explaining the error and providing the correct information. This letter should be signed by an authorized representative of your company and include your current EIN.
Can you transfer an EIN to a new owner? Typically, if there has been a change in business structure or ownership, you cant transfer an EIN to a new owner. So, you will need to obtain a new EIN.
Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity. The EIN will still belong to the business entity and can be used at a later date, should the need arise.
Simply call (800) 829-4933 and select EIN from the list of options. Once connected with an IRS employee, tell the assistor you received an EIN from the Internet but cant remember it. The IRS employee will ask the necessary disclosure and security questions prior to providing the number.
