The term Drawing Revision refers to modifications that are made to a drawing after it has been signed and issued. The first revision to a drawing takes place after the initial issue of the drawing is signed and released for bid or construction.
A revision is made when a drawing is changed. An issue is made when a drawing is issued to one or more parties.
Revisions are used to manage pending and released changes to parts, assemblies, software, drawings, and other documents. While revisions and versions are sometimes used interchangeably, they are different. Versions typically relate to an iteration, but a revision is a controlled version.
Shop drawings are produced by contractors and suppliers under their contract with the owner. The shop drawing is the manufacturers or the contractors drawn version of information shown in the construction documents. The shop drawing normally shows more detail than the construction documents.
An amended drawing would suggest more that a minor change was made to the existing drawing.
ASME Y14. 35 standard allow for changes to be made to drawings by adding and crossing out information on a drawing or by creating a new drawing revision. The ASME drawing standards state that new drawings can be recorded as a new revision letter or as a new drawing number that supersedes the old one.
Broadly speaking, design revision is any change made to a design after the first draft is created. It can be as simple as changing a few pictures or major changes such as the correction of a design direction.
The term shop drawings can mean different things to different people, but generally it is defined as drawings meant to express how the contractor plans to build the designed project. However, while shop drawings and other submittals are important, they do not supersede the actual contract documents.
