How to update cross-references in Word Launch Word and open your project. The first step to updating cross-references in Word is launching the program and opening your project or a new document. Create your cross-references as you write. Highlight a cross-reference to update it. Update all cross-references at once.
You can also update a single cross-reference by selecting it and pressing F9. If, for some reason, you want to remove the hyperlinks, again select the text of the footnotes, and press Ctrl Shift F9.
Instead of searching and replacing all the figure numbers in the text, click Edit - Select All (or, Ctrl + A), which select the entire document, then, press F9. This updates all the figure number automatically.
Updating cross-references Cross-references do not automatically update when you make changes to your document. To update an individual cross-reference, highlight it and press F9 or right-click and select Update Field. To update all cross-references in your document: Press Ctrl + A (or Edit Select All)
Choose Type Hyperlinks Cross-References Insert Cross-Reference. Choose Window Type Tables Cross-References, and then choose Insert Cross-Reference from the panel menu. Click the Create New Cross-Reference button in the panel.
Updating all footnote cross-references in a document: Next, press Ctrl + A (PC) or Command + A (Mac) to select all text below the line, then press the F9 button (PC) or Function (fn) + F9 (Mac). A warning message will appear indicating the action cant be undone and asking if you want to proceed.
