4 Steps to Refinishing Your Log Home: Step 1: Inspect Your Home for Necessary Repairs. Water damage or rot. Step 2: Clean the Logs. You will want to clean the logs of dust and stains, but avoid using chlorine bleach. Step 3: Stain and Finish the Logs. Step 4: Seal the Logs.
For the interior of a Log Cabin we often recommend products like Fiddes Hard Wax Oil or Osmo Polyx Oil, for a natural look and feel to the wood. Hard Wax Oils are durable, liquid repellent and resistant to dirt, dust and other marks.

We recommend cleaning logs with a combination of water and a wood-friendly detergent, i.e. TSP (Trisodium Phosphate Cleaner). We want to stress that we DO NOT recommend power-washing logs to clean them. Applying water under high pressure can be detrimental to the health of a log building.
Use Epoxy or Wood Putty to Fill the Wood- To make sure there is an even finish, wood or epoxy filler should be applied to areas of wood that need to be filled. Make sure that any excess putty is removed before it dries, so we would recommend, that this process is done as efficiently as possible.
As a rule of thumb, there will be a measurable loss in four to six weeks of warm (over 50 F) weather. It is just a rule of thumb.

You can repair rotten wood by first removing the rotting from the original board or joists. You can then fill the surrounding area with a soft wood polyester filler or wood patch using a plastic putty knife. This material fills the area and cures to ensure strength and resilience.
With vinyl siding, it is common to use a pressure washer and water to blast away dirt and grime, but we do not suggest using the same methods for the exterior of a log home. The reason why is logs naturally retain moisture and adding too much water will increase the likelihood of mold and fungus growth.
There are three surefire ways to waterproof your wood for years to come. Use linseed or Tung oil to create a beautiful and protective hand-rubbed finish. Seal the wood with coating of polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer. Finish and waterproof wood simultaneously with a stain-sealant combo.
