Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause. Example: In the beginning, there was light. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence.
A comma splice is the unjustifiable use of only a comma to combine two separate sentences. (One should use either a period, a semicolon, or a coordinating conjunction and a comma to separate the two statements.)
Bracketing commas are used to mark additional information in a sentence. For example: These studies, in spite of their shared focus on locality, approach the topic from contrasting perspectives. You can check you have used these commas correctly by removing the bracketed section from the sentence.
There are several ways to correct comma splices. One of the easiest ways to correct comma splices is to create two separate sentences. Usually, a comma indicates a brief pause. You can also correct a comma splice by inserting a coordinating conjunction such as and, or, nor, for, or but.
A gapping comma indicates that you have decided not to repeat some words which have already occurred in the sentence: Jupiter is the largest planet and Pluto, the smallest.
There are three ways to fix a comma splice. You can add a conjunction, change the comma to a semicolon, or make each independent clause its own sentence.
To avoid a comma splice you can do one of several things. You can 1) make each clause its own sentence, 2) you can join the clauses with a semicolon instead of a comma, or 3) you can replace the comma with a conjunction like and, but, because, or although.
Fixing Comma Splices Because the clauses on either side of a comma splice are independent, the error can be fixed by replacing the comma with a period or a semicolon. e.g., I am drinking a lot of coffee today. I was up too late last night.
