The data contained within ENCs can be used by electronic navigation systems to enable safer voyage planning and route monitoring. This includes initiating warnings and alarms when a ship is heading into shallow water or toward other dangers to navigation. Updated ENC revision files are available weekly.
A nautical chart is one of the most fundamental tools available to the mariner. It is a map that depicts the configuration of the shoreline and seafloor. It provides water depths, locations of dangers to navigation, locations and characteristics of aids to navigation, anchorages, and other features.
Nautical charts are updated with the most current information available through several processes and workflows within NOAAs Office of Coast Survey. The large majority of these updates consist of revisions to water depth information.
To correct a chart, look up the number of the chart in the index at the front of the NTM, by the chart number there will be a list of all the corrections that relate to that chart. Each correction is given a number to identify it. You then need to look up the correction to discover the details.
REMEMBER: It is important to have up to date nautical charts so you can be aware of the latest changes on routes, buoys and water depth.
Many mariners understand the importance of having charts onboard but it is just as important to ensure that your charts are up to date. If a buoy has changed or there is a new obstruction, you need to know about it before you encounter it, not after.
