hi everyone dr bob stark again this is a pretty short video weamp;#39;re just going to quickly talk about how we represent characters using binary and also hexadecimal type data the first thing we need to talk about is ascii asc i i stands for the american standard code for information interchange this is the long very very long in the tooth long-running character set um that um you know most computers have have adopted as of you know many many years ago yeah so itamp;#39;s itamp;#39;s a very standard set itamp;#39;s actually 128 characters so it is a 7-bit binary sequence or hex that is used to map to the characters we see on the screen um that includes letters uh numbers punctuation control characters seeing some things there uh you canamp;#39;t see that uh have effects on the screen like like line feeds um there are 8-bit ascii character sets that are compatible with the 7-bit ones but the the upper 128-255 characters we donamp;#39;t pay any attention to those for right now in
